The health benefits of a vegetarian diet
Nowadays, the vegetarianism is on an upward trend. There are more people following the vegetarian diet, so much so that you may even know someone who had decided to alter his or her eating habits. Celebrities have definitely added to the popularity of vegetarianism because when asked about how they maintained their ideal weight, they are very outspoken about the method they have chosen. The number of people who follow the vegetarian diet all over the world is steadily growing; literally millions of people have chosen to go vegetarian.
Some people are not aware of vegetarianism until now. The truth is that it was also wildly popular back in the ancient times. The 6th century BC saw early Indians and early Greeks adopting a vegetarian diet because of their belief that one should not harm of cause violence to any animal. Today, there are many other reasons for vegetarianism. A number of religions, such as Jainism and Hinduism, encourage its members to follow a vegetarian diet plan. Hinduism has three reasons for refusing to eat meat. First, ahimsa, or a lifestyle of non-violence especially to animals, is widely practiced. Second, they believe that they should only offer pure food to their deities. Lastly, they believe that non-vegetarian foods would harm the mind, body, and spirit of humans.
Jainism, similar to Hinduism, follows a lifestyle of non-violence. Additionally, they forbid eating root crops and honey in the belief that the pulling of root crops can harm small insects while harvesting honey is considered as an act of violence against the bees. Some people have also shunned the consumption of meat products and other animal-derived commercial products. This is due to the belief that animal slaughter and mass production are unethical practices that should not be supported at all. They are passionate about animal rights. PETA, in particular, has been very outspoken in their support for animal life. They have been known to storm fashion events that feature fur coats, even going to the extent of attacking anyone who was wearing real fur. Other people choose a vegetarian diet simply because of preferences. They don’t like eating meat because its taste is unappealing to them.
There are numerous benefits of having a vegetarian diet. First, some have no choice. Meat may be expensive or scarce, thus, it is much more convenient to eat all vegetables instead. These people are not aware that they are already following the vegetarian trend. For people who have no problems with budgeting their money for their meals, the vegetarian diet is a conscious choice, either for losing weight or maintaining a sound body. Perhaps the most popular reason for an all-vegetable diet is because of environment conservation. Keeping farms taxes the environment through gas emissions and food demands. Their shift in eating habits are not only good for their environment, it is good for their bodies too, as discussed below.
Vegetarianism can herald a longer life span and a healthier body. According to the ADA, or American Dietetic Association, there is no real risk of nutrition deficiency if all meals are planned properly. Maintaining a healthy weight and not eating harmful fats that can clog the arteries can prevent cardiovascular diseases. Heart diseases are one of the leading causes of mortality not only across the nation, but all over the world as well.
A number of studies have shown that there is a connection between high intakes of fiber and low consumption of fats with lower body weights. Those who eat meat usually weigh more than vegetarians because of consumption of foods that are have high saturated fat content without balancing it with vegetable intake. Vegetarians are also likely to prevent risks of hypertension and low blood pressure because of their diet. They do not consume much saturated fat, adding less to their total fat. Meat products have fat content to a certain degree, and, when accumulated over time, this can lead to high blood pressure. Fiber and a healthy helping of vegetables and fruits also help. In relation to the health benefit mentioned above, lower fat and meat intake can lead to lower cholesterol levels. Eating more fruits and vegetables significantly decreases the risk for colon cancer. Colon cancer usually develops from the interaction of low fiber, high fat, and high protein. This effect is usually seen on people who consume mostly or only meat and few or no vegetables at all. This has not been scientifically proven yet, but it helps to know this so that you can avoid it.
