Optifast weight loss diet program

Optifast is a medically supervised meal replacement diet program that has been in existence since 1974. The website states that they base their continuing success on the fact that they treat the person as a whole in their weight loss program not just pay attention to the physical issues of being overweight. This program was designed for people who are considered obese being at least 50 pounds overweight or having a BMI (body mass index) of over 30.

They offer emotional counseling and support, education on their lifestyle and changes that need to be made, medical monitoring, and their meal replacement program. This gives their clients a comprehensive program that is designed to achieve successful weight loss results in a short period of time. They also focus on the health benefits of losing weight such as lowering the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Other benefits can include lower blood pressure readings as well as lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Several clinical studies have been done on this program including one which showed that at least 50% of the people that were successful on the Optifast program were able to maintain the weight loss and doing so improved their overall health for the long term. The reason for this is due to the fact that Optifast is not just a diet, it is a way of life and allows the client access to a community of resources and ongoing support that will benefit them long after they lose their initial weight.

The Optifast program includes medical monitoring for its clients. This includes a thorough medical evaluation including history, physical and lab work. The medical professional then works with the client to make up a personalized weight loss plan which is based on their health and weight loss goals. They also give clients ongoing medical monitoring throughout the course of the weight loss program to keep up with current health conditions. The medical provider also works and communicates with the client’s primary care physician as needed to coordinate medical care and any medication changes that are needed.

Optifast has many clinics in cities around the United States. These clinics give clients access to medical physicians, registered dieticians, and counselors. They offer group sessions for discussion and support purposes. Clients also have access to educational materials and receive personalized
activity plans that are tailored to meet their individual needs.

The Optifast plan is designed to last for 26 weeks in duration during the initial weight reduction phase of the program. The first twelve weeks of that plan consist of drinking the meal replacement shakes only. The next six weeks are designated for working toward transitioning back to regular solid food. The last 8 weeks of the program consists of eating regular food while still maintaining a sensible amount of calories and nutritional intake. This program includes 20 weeks of nutritional counseling for the client to work out emotional triggers and other behavioral issues that may affect their life once the diet phase has ended. Clients are closely monitored by medical personnel for the first 18 weeks of the diet program. This part of the program includes weekly medical visits and group therapy and support sessions.

There have been reports by many people of their success with this program since its inception. However that does not mean that the program is without side effects or issues. Changing a person’s diet to one that is completely liquid for twelve weeks is a huge lifestyle change and will require iron will and stamina to get through for some people. This does seem to be one of the better diet programs however due to its medical monitoring and treating the whole person rather than just the body approach.
