Metrogel is a prescription treatment for acne rosacea.  It has been used popularly for that purpose, and it basically works by killing off bacteria, which is thought to be the ultimate cause of acne rosacea.  It is thought to be relatively calm and unharmful as compared to the other possible treatments for rosacea.

So the question in many minds is what is rosacea?  After all, if you don’t actually suffer from it, you are far more likely to disregard it.  Basically speaking, rosacea sets in generally around the age of 30.  It is thought to be more common in those with fair skin, women, and of course those at the age of 30.  But the reality is it may be more common than we think.  It is characterized by easy flushing and redness in general, which would not be as easily seen in those with darker skin tones.  In addition, the simple fact is that it can happen at a younger age.

However, it is also characterized by bumps, which could very easily be mistaken for acne vulgaris as well as a grimy problem.  Now it is more common in women, men generally don’t suffer it.  And that is for sure.  The reason is unknown, obviously hormones are different.  But realistically speaking, there is no explained cause or reason for it.  They can only kill off bacteria temporarily, and so constant treatment is actually required.

However, like other common treatments for rosacea, Metrogel is trying to kill off even resistant bacteria that generally speaking, 2.5%-10% benzoyl peroxide for example is not actually going to kill the rosacea related bacteria.  Now a chemical peel that uses benzoyl peroxide is a popular option, and it does work at least temporarily.  Likewise, this antibacterial Metrogel has been known to be considerably stronger than your average antibacterial, killing off more bacteria and therefore working.

The problem is that with greater strength in this case comes greater side effects.  Many are finding that the side effects obviously are not worth it for them, and all in all, some choose not to use treatments on as regular a basis as they should.  Metrogel is the one with the least side effects all things considered, especially considering how vulnerable rosacea actually makes the skin.  But Metrogel ironically has been known to cause some of the same symptoms in terms of side effects as acne rosacea such as redness, burning, dryness, scaling, peeling, stinging, easy flushing, headache, stomach upset, or severe allergic reactions.

However, one should keep in mind that you should never not treat rosacea.  The earlier you catch it, the better your chances are of actually controlling it.  And if you do not treat it or ignore it using only standard acne treatments, it will get considerably worse.  It is extremely unfortunate that choices are so limited with acne rosacea, and they are always looking for greater options, options with fewer side effects.  But so far, this is all they have.
