Meridia weight loss drug

meridia_03meridia_05In 1997, Knoll Pharmaceutical Company introduced its prescription answer to the obesity epidemic, Meridia. Unlike diet supplements that can be purchased over the counter. Prescription Meridia does not contain any fancy herbs from far away lands. There are no magic, quick fix leaves and berries to “burn” your fat in a matter of weeks. There is no caffeine disguised as fruit to make you feel jittery and nauseous. Instead, Meridia is the result of science.

Meridia works by stopping you from having food cravings and hunger pangs. Sounds simple, right? In reality, the way that Meridia works is pretty complex. You see, your brain releases different chemicals in order to make you feel happy, sad, full, etcetera. One of these chemicals, Serotonin, is released after you’ve eaten. The release of Serotonin tells your body that it doesn’t need any more food and that it is full. So, how is it that eventually you get hungry again? Well, chemicals like Serotonin don’t just float around your brain indefinitely. After a while they travel through your brain and toward a receptor that only they can fit into. Once they fin their receptor, they lock into it and then, your body works to reabsorb them. This is called reuptake. Once the Serotonin has been reabsorbed, you no longer feel full and your hunger and cravings come back. Now, calorically speaking, this hunger does not mean that you definitely need to eat. You may have already consumed enough calories to meet your energy expenditure for the day. But, without the Serotonin to make you feel full, you won’t know that.

Meridia is what is called a reuptake inhibitor. That means that it inhibits your body’s ability to reabsorb the Serotonin by binding to it and making it harder for your body to absorb. This means that the sensation of fullness given by Serotonin lasts longer. This keeps you from craving snacks in between meals, and can make you less hungry at meal times. The result? Decreased caloric intake and healthy weight loss.

Meridia is not the right weight loss drug for all dieters. Only people with a medical condition such as high blood pressure and diabetes with a body mass impact of 27 to 29 or anyone with a body mass index of 30 or higher. Meridia does not offer an overnight solution to the obesity epidemic. You can’t eat as you normally would and still expect to lose weight. Meridia is a realistic solution; a tool to help you in your efforts to lose weight. Without effort on your part to cut calories, you may not lose weight even if you take prescription Meridia. There have been some users who have had adverse reactions and side effects after using it. Some side effects may include high blood pressure and increased risk of heart attack or stroke. The Food and Drug Administration are aware of the side effects but have not banned it. They are monitoring it in case a future ban is in order.

You can expect to lose about two pounds per week on Meridia. Studies by Meridia clinicians show that almost half of the folks who take Meridia and lose weight within six months are able to keep it off for years to come when they continue to take Meridia and with a diet and exercise routine.

You may be excited to start your new diet and exercise routine with the help of Meridia, but be sure to set an appointment with your doctor first. Meridia is a prescription medication and your doctor should be aware of any other changes you plan to make while taking it.
