Lipodissolve

Lipodissolve is a new medical procedure that is designed to dissolve fat stores that are in the body. The proponents of the procedure claim that it gets rid of all those unwanted bumps and bulges that are troublesome to many woman over the age of 30. It has been used to get rid of bags under eyes, double chins, thunder thighs, love handles, saddlebags and muffin tops to name a few.

However does this procedure really work the way that they claim?

The procedure works by a medical professional injecting substances into the areas of fat that the person wants to be dissolved. The injection is said to be painless and the procedure is performed without any type of anesthesia. The substances that are injected proceed to cause a chemical reaction in the body that causes fatty tissue to break down or dissolve. They state that it can take up to three weeks to see results from this procedure and that it takes from four to six injections to receive maximum results. These are given with intervals of four to six weeks between injections. Each injection can cost from $400-$1,500 per treatment given. As stated above, up to six treatments may be needed to get the desired results.

So what substances are they injecting?

There are several different substances that are being used for lipodissolve at the present time. One of the most popular seems to be phosphatidylcholine/deoxycholate (PCDC) which is an extract that is derived from soy beans. Other substances used are multivitamins, alpha lipid acid, and plant extracts. Some physicians are compounding these substances with antibiotics, hormones, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

How safe is this? Are there side effects?

While some proponents of the procedure state that these do work and also promote the formation of collagen which helps in healthy and firm formation, there are other factors to consider here. This procedure and the substances that are used have not been approved by the FDA for use on people here in the United States. Therefore it is prudent for consumers to be cautious when considering having procedures like this done. Physicians, researchers, and scientists alike have commented that there is some documented evidence that this product does dissolve fat. What they are concerned about is where does the fat go once it is dissolved? There are concerns that it could travel in the bloodstream then attach itself to the liver and cause problems with liver disease in the future. There are other concerns that the fat molecules might deposit in the blood vessels or travel to the lungs or heart and cause cardiovascular disease for people in the future.

Since this has not been approved by the FDA and there has not been adequate research done as to its far reaching effects, caution is advised when considering this. Due to its cost and with all the other factors involved, it might be prudent to stick with liposuction until more is known about lipodissolve. It is also interesting to note that the American Academy of Plastic Surgeons does not recommend having this procedure at the present time. There are however, limited clinical trials for this procedure being done at this time that do meet FDA criteria. If you are interested in learning more please do an internet search on this subject.

If your heart is set on getting this procedure done please do your homework. Make sure your physician is a licensed plastic surgeon and has studied these procedures well. Ask questions as to how many of these procedures they have done and what the results have been of those procedures. Ask ahead of time which substance will be used in your injections as well as how many injections you will need. Another factor is to ask if there are any problems or contraindications due to any medications you might be taking at the present time. It might be prudent to consult with your family physician to ask their advice on the safety of this procedure for you. As with any other medical procedure, this is not without risk so take your time and weigh all the pros and cons before making any major decisions when it comes to your health.
