Diabetes prevention diet

People who are at risk of developing diabetes need to do everything that they can to prevent the disease. This is very important as the numbers of diabetics are continuing to rise every year. Every year the numbers of overweight and obese individuals rise so do the numbers of people who are being diagnosed as being diabetic also rise. The Center for Disease Control has predicted that close to 50 million people will be diabetic by the time 2050 rolls around. A very sad note is that as our numbers of children being obese rise, we are seeing them being diagnosed with diabetes as well. This was unheard of in the past.

So who is at risk of developing diabetes? People who are overweight or obese are at a much higher risk of developing diabetes. Those people who have a family history of diabetes are higher risk as well. For those people it is very important that they follow any and all recommendations that can result in being helpful in preventing diabetes. This is not just important for those who are at high risk of developing diabetes, however. These recommendations are worth following for anyone as they are healthy rules to live by.

So how can someone prevent diabetes? Well there are several things that we can do. The first thing is to get out and do more. No, you do not have to start an elaborate exercise routine. Just get out and take a walk three times a week. The key is to start doing something that you can continue. Many people start out on programs that are so elaborate or complicated after being sedentary that there is no way they can be successful. Start slowly and work your way up. Build your confidence and your stamina as you go. This is the key to success! Research has proven that regular activity can and will lower the blood sugar and increase a person’s sensitivity to insulin which helps us regulate our blood sugar better.

Another rule of thumb is to increase fiber intake. Most people do not eat nearly enough fiber in their diet. Fiber helps to regulate blood sugar by slowing down the digestive process. It helps us to eat less by making us feel full while eating less. Fiber rich foods are vegetables, grains, fruits, seeds, and nuts. Fiber supplements are available for anyone that cannot get enough fiber in their dietary intake. Eat more whole grains as they have been shown to reduce our chance of heart disease as well as cholesterol and other issues. Researchers have not been able to find out exactly why this works but it has been shown that eating whole grains can help to regulate blood sugar levels much better than other pastas.

For those people who are overweight, it is time to start taking those extra pounds off. For every pounds that a person can lose, health is improved! The heart works less hard and insulin requirements are less. Even losing 5% of a person’s weight can be a very big plus in helping to reduce their risk toward becoming a diabetic.

Choose a healthy way of life and stop using diets that claim they can make you lose 10 pounds in 3 days. That is not healthy and people end up gaining back more weight than they lose. It is better to try to change habits and to become more healthy and lose weight gradually than it is to give in to the hype of all the marketing on those commercials that are nothing but fads and don’t work anyway!

By changing lifestyles and making themselves more healthy, keeping weight down and eating properly, people can reduce their chances of developing diabetes in the future.
