Dexatrim is a dietary weight loss supplement that has been on the market for many years now. It has been recalled by the FDA more than once for containing ingredients that were considered harmful. Once it was recalled in 2001 for containing phenylpropanolamine. This was an ingredient that was used in many over the counter drugs for nasal congestion as well as for weight loss. This worked by increasing the heart rate and metabolism. The FDA recalled it due to the fact that they felt it opened the user to increased risk of stroke. Then again in 2002 the FDA recalled Dexatrim once again due to the fact that it contained ephedra. The FDA pulled all diet supplements at that time that contained this due to the fact that serious side effects such as stroke, heart attack and even death had been linked to this ingredient.

Dexatrim keeps coming back with “new” and improved ingredients. Today their diet pills contain a combination of vitamins and herbal supplements that are designed to increase the metabolism, burn fats and increase and sustain glucose levels. This is designed to stave off attacks of hunger.

So let us take a look at the ingredients of the new and improved Dexatrim and see if it is really all that it is touted to be. The first ingredient that is listed is bitter orange. This is a stimulant which is very similar to ephedra and can have the same side effects that ephedra had. This leads to the very real potential of cardiovascular side effects or concerns. So caution is suggested here.

Next is Yohimbe Bark. Yohimbe Bark has been chewed by natives in Africa for centuries to help improve their sexual nature and combat impotence however that does not seem to apply here so after looking further it appears that it is also an antioxidant of sorts and can help increase blood flow in the arteries. The down side to this is that it can increase the blood pressure as well. Combine it with the bitter orange above which can also increase blood pressure and heart issues. It does not take a rocket scientist to see that these two in combination need to be carefully evaluated.

Eleuthero Root is the next ingredient that is listed. This is more commonly known as Siberian Ginseng. Ginseng is used to increase energy and the feeling of well being. There are no known toxicities or severe side effects to this ingredient that can be found at the present time.

Next in the line up comes Licorice Root. This is used as a laxative in some areas as well as to aid digestion. The negative side to this ingredient is that it too can cause increases in blood pressure.

Rutin is the next ingredient listed in the Dexatrim formula. This nutrient has been known to be a powerful antioxidant and is helpful in strengthening the capillaries in the cardiovascular system.

Kelp, Fenugeek, and Hesperidin round out the first round or primary proprietary formula. These nutrients help to stabilize blood glucose levels as well as decrease cholesterol levels in the blood. It is unknown as to what their exact function in weight loss is.

Their secondary proprietary blend includes cocoa bark, green tea extract and caffeine. Caffeine increases the heart rate and metabolism. Green tea extract has some of the same properties as well as being a powerful antioxidant and healthy nutrient in our daily diets. Cocoa has been shown in some studies to have some effect on glucose levels but no human studies have been done to show its effectiveness on weight loss.

In light of all the questionable ingredients above and their potential side effects it would be wise for anyone who is thinking of using this supplement to approach it very cautiously. It might be wise to consult with a physician to make sure it is safe to use as well.
