Clear Liquid Diet

The Clear Liquid Diet is a plan that is implemented for different reasons. It is only temporary, as most people could not survive in a healthy fashion on this one for too long. One reason for using the Clear Liquid Diet is to prepare for surgery or medical tests requiring the stomach and the intestines to be relatively free of food. It is also recommended for people who have been ill and/or not able to eat food for a period of time or for someone recovering from surgery.

While the Clear Liquid Diet is not very “filling” or satisfying, it does help you stay hydrated as well as helping to get your body readjusted to food after a long time without it. The primary advantage of the Clear Liquid Diet is that it is easily digestible, and leaves very little behind in the stomach and the intestines.

When it comes to knowing what is considered “clear liquids,” the definition of these is liquids you are able to see through, and are room temperature, which is usually about 72-78 degrees Fahrenheit. Items on this list would include broths, clear juices, ices, hard candy and gelatin.

Liquids you can have on the Clear Liquid Diet are fruit juices that are free from pulp. These juices are apple, grape, and cranberry. You can have soups such as bouillon, broth, or fat free consommé’. Beverages allowed are coffee, cold or hot tea, soda, water, and Kool-Aid.

Semblances of dessert that you can enjoy on the Clear Liquid Diet are plain gelatin, popsicles made from clear juices, clear hard candy, and fruit ices without the chunks of fruit.

Forbidden foods on the Clear Liquid Diet are canned, fresh, or frozen fruit, nectars, cream soups, or soups with noodles, rice, meat, vegetables or any other food chunks in them. You are also not allowed to consume any other foods that are not on the allowed list.

On a typical Clear Liquid Diet, breakfast would consist of hot tea with 1 teaspoon of sugar and lemon juice, 8 ounces of apple juice, and 1 cup of gelatin. Lunch would be an exciting mixture of hot tea with sugar and lemon, 8 ounces of grape juice, 1 cup of fruit ice, and 8 ounces of consommé’. A snack that you would really look forward to might be 8 ounces of apple, grape, or cranberry juice, and 1 cup of gelatin. Dinner would be an enticing affair of hot tea with sugar and lemon, 8 ounces of apple juice, 8 ounces of consommé’ and 1 cup of fruit ice.

In spite of this rather unappetizing selection of liquids, the above daily menu is still approximately 1,000 calories. This diet is not normally used for weight loss, although it could be quite effective as long as it was only used for a short period of time. However, it would also be one of those diets that would not keep the weight off, as it would come creeping back once you returned to having actual food in your diet.
