Atkins grapefruit diet

The Atkins grapefruit diet is a combination of two popular diet programs. What this diet consists of is following the original Atkins diet while adding either a serving of grapefruit, grapefruit juice, or the grapefruit pills before or with each meal that is eaten. It has long been reported that there is an enzyme in grapefruit that works to burn unwanted fats in the body. By adding it to the popular Atkins diet plan, dieters add a powerful fat burning property to their weight loss program.

Let’s take a look at the Atkins diet plan and what is allowed on it. People who are following this diet plan are allowed to eat foods that are high in protein and even fats. However, carbohydrates are severely limited on this diet plan. In the induction phase, or the first two weeks of the diet plan carbohydrates are limited to 20 grams per day. The proponents of the plan state that this phase of the diet plan help jumpstart your metabolism and start you body on its journey of weight loss by forcing it to burn fats instead of carbohydrates due to the severely limited amount that are ingested during this phase.

There seems to be some confusion here concerning the amount of carbohydrates that are allowed on this version of the Atkins diet plan. Each glass of grapefruit juice contains 9 grams of carbohydrates so 2 glasses per day would yield 18 grams and that does not include the third serving of grapefruit that is recommended on this plan. It seems that the carbohydrate restrictions are less stringent on the Atkins grapefruit plan than they are on the basic Atkins plan however it is hard to find any real documentation on this. If a person is concerned about raising the limits of the carbohydrates allowed in the diet per day they can consume the grapefruit pills which will give them the same benefits but will not affect the amount of carbohydrates that are consumed for the day.

The remaining phases of the Atkins plan work to reintroduce certain foods to the diet in a manner that allow them to continue to lose weight and learn how to eat for the long term while keeping the weight off that they have lost. Phase 2 of the Atkins plan is called ongoing weight loss and is designed to be followed until the dieter is within 10 pounds of their weight loss goal. They then move on to the pre maintenance portion of the plan. Pre maintenance teaches the dieter how to add good carbohydrates back into their diet and life while leaving off the foods that are not good for them. They also encourage dieters to work out a personalized dietary plan that they can stick to for the long term. The last portion of the Atkins plan is for lifetime maintenance. It is exactly what it states. It helps the dieter to stay on a healthy diet without picking up previous bad habits that led them to becoming obese in the first place.

The proponents of the Atkins grapefruit plan state that this diet works better because it makes the body burn more fats than it would initially. This may be true especially in the second through fourth stages where Atkins is reintroducing carbohydrates back into the diet. However there is little research to show whether this version of the Atkins plan is really better than the basic Atkins plan or not. As with any weight loss plan it is good to do your research and if you have any questions about the safety of the plan consult with your physician or medical professional before starting a plan such as this.
