Adjustable gastric banding surgery

There are several types of bariatric surgery available to morbidly obese people who want to lose weight quickly but have been unsuccessful using other more conservative methods. One of these types of surgery is the adjustable band surgery or lap band surgery which is what most people calls this procedure.

This type of surgery is newer and is reportedly safer than the gastric bypass surgery. This procedure is considered the most popular procedure of these types of surgery now because of the ability to adjust or reverse the procedure if needed. The lap band is a restrictive plastic band that is positioned around the top of the stomach, separating the stomach into two parts. This gives the feeling of being full after eating very small amounts of foods. In this type of procedure the digestive process is not bypassed. Food is digested as it normally would be. Weight loss is achieved due to the fact that only small amounts can be eaten at one time.

The restrictive bands can be adjusted as needed to be more or less restrictive as needed for the particular patient. This surgery is easily reversed which reduces the incidence of malabsorption syndrome that is seen with other types of bariatric surgery. This makes the procedure a big hit with both surgeons and patients alike.

The main risk with this procedure is that leakage can occur around the band. Some people have experienced nausea and vomiting. There have been reports of the band slipping or migrating somewhere other than where was placed. However if this does occur, the band can be adjusted with a minimally invasive procedure. This is one of the reasons that so many surgeons are performing this type of procedure now. People who are interested in surgery of this kind prefer this surgery for the reasons listed above as well.

The lap band surgery can be performed through a laparoscope which makes the incision needed much smaller and hospital stays shorter for patients as well. People who have had this type of surgery will need to watch their diets very closely. Even though this type of procedure does not promote malabsorption as part of the way it works, care needs to be taken to make sure that adequate amounts of certain aspects of the diet are eaten. Protein is one of the main concerns for patients after lap band surgery. Protein shakes or other supplements may need to be utilized in order to be able to get the recommended amount of protein needed for a person to remain healthy.
